You might just be working with this same neutral couch that seems to be in so many homes. A lot of new construction homes lack character and architectural details. This is why you really need to focus in on pattern and color to add some life to your living room. One of the least expensive ways to do this is with throw pillows. Yes this is very common way of decorating that you can do in nontraditional ways. Try mixing a lot of different patterns and colors to really liven up a room. You could pair purples with red and blues a very lively and powerful look. You can try mixing different geometric prints and patterns to really make a statement in the room on a budget.
The very first think you must decide on is the style of the curtains you wish to place in the most important room in your home as this is the room you do most of your entertaining. Some considerations that will need to be made so you can dazzle all enter.
Maximize the Usability of Larger Rooms If your living room is quite large you might actually be wasting the space by using it only as a living room. Instead you can simulate the look and feel of an open floor plan by dividing the large space into smaller living areas. For example if you currently have your living room furniture arranged against the walls of the room try pulling some of the pieces in towards the center. Instead of widely spaced pieces create a smaller and more intimate living room area. You can then use the rest of the room for other purposes. For example you could create a small dining room area in one corner of the living room thus creating an open floor plan between these two rooms. Or create a small home office family library or reading area in a similar fashion. You might be surprised how much larger the room seems after youve divided it into two different living spaces. This arrangement is also quite useful if you do a lot of entertaining since you can effectively create several intimate conversation areas instead of one overly large room.
What do the words home theater mean to you? A big screen TV in your living room with surround sound speakers hidden behind the couch or a custom designed room with every possible high-end audio/video equipment and dedicated theater seating? The choice comes down to your level of use... and your pocketbook.
